Men's soccer moves undefeated streak to six

After battling to a scoreless tie the last time they met, the MiraCosta College men's soccer team and first-place San Diego City College both scored in the second half and finished with another tie, this time by a score of 1-1.

Without two of its starting midfielders, MiraCosta (4-5-7 overall, 4-1-6 PCAC) scored the first goal of the series between the two teams eight minutes into the second half as Ricardo Gonzalez put the ball in the back of the net after a corner kick from Joseph Kicko.

Gonzalez previously had two shots in the first half, the first of which was a header in the 19th minute that just went wide after another corner by Kicko. It was the first chance to get on the board for MiraCosta, who withstood a furious start by San Diego (9-3-5, 7-2-3) that resulted in numerous early scoring opportunities.

Oscar Sowell and the Spartans backline, however, were up to the task against the Knights 12 shots on goal. Sowell would finish with eight saves in goal.

The lone goal for San Diego came via a penalty kick in the 61st minute, eight minutes after the Spartans netted what could have been the deciding score.

The Spartans, who began the day fourth in the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference standings and second in terms of winning percentage, remained unbeaten in the month of October and also finished with a draw for the fourth straight match. San Diego kept ahold of the top spot in the PCAC.

In its final match of October, MiraCosta heads to Imperial Valley College, who is still winless in the PCAC, for a 3:30 p.m. matchup on Friday, Oct. 28.
