Men's soccer ties Palomar 1-1

The MiraCosta College men's soccer team earned its second three-match undefeated streak of the season after battling Palomar College to a 1-1 tie Tuesday afternoon.

After recording wins in its first two matches of October, including one over a strong San Bernardino Valley College squad last time out, MiraCosta (4-5-4 overall, 4-1-3 PCAC) remained unbeaten in the month. Additionally, MiraCosta, now in third place in the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference after starting the day in second, swapped places in the conference standings with San Bernardino after failing to earn the victory. Palomar earned its first tie of the conference slate as it moved to 2-8-3 overall and 1-7-1 in the league.

The Spartans looked great early as Julio Sanchez scored in the second minute and MiraCosta dominated possession in the opening 45 minutes. The second half, however, was a different story as the Comets played with a little more sense of urgency and finally netted the tying goal in the 78th minute.

MiraCosta had opportunites to expand their lead to multiple goals earlier in the match. Two of such opportunities came from Yan Guimaraes Pereira De Moraes, who fired a laser off the top of the crossbar in the 39th minute, and Johnthan Palacios whose header went just high less than 10 minutes into the second half.

De Moraes finished with four shots on goal for MiraCosta, while Eddie Franco added two on goal and Guilherme Borges Guimares had two total attempts.

Oscar Sowell started and played the first 61 minutes in goal before giving way to Luis Briseno, who eventually surrended the tying goal.

Next up, the Spartans will look to remain undefeated while also getting back into the win column as they cap a three-match homestand by hosting San Diego Mesa College at 4 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 14.
