Spartans Fall in Epic Five Game Match

In the first of two Pacific Coast Athletic Conference cross-over games the MiraCosta College women's volleyball team lost in what was one of the most epic matches played in the program's current three year history.  After winning the the first two sets the Spartans lost the third and fourth, setting up a fifth and deciding set.  The fifth set, typically played to only 15 points, saw numerous lead changes and impressive ralleys.  The final score, because a team has to win by two points, was 21-19.

Early on in the match Makayla Sua made her presence felt with four kills and four blocks, but had to leave in the middle of the second set to attend a night class.  Violeti Faleumu made up difference with a break out night with 13 kills. Cady Francis led the backcourt with 27 digs.  Lana Salazar led with four aces and contributed 20 digs.  Claudia Mathews (9 kills), Maddison Penrod (7 kills) and Claire Kinder (7 kills) all contributed on the offensive attack.

The Spartans (23-3, 8-0) will travel to Irvine Valley College on Monday and Grossmont College on Wednesday to finish off the regular season.  CCCAA state playoffs will begin November 22nd.
