Spartans Kick Off Season With A Strong Showing

To open their season the MiraCosta women's volleyball team traveled to the LA Pierce College volleyball tournament. The Spartans began the tournament with 3-0 sweep over Pasadena City College.  MiraCosta got a balanced attack from Claudia Mathews (9 kills), Maddison Penrod (9 kills), Roni Long (8 kills), Violeti Faleumu (7 kills) and Cady Francis (6 kills). 

The win against Pasadena City College earned the Spartans a match against cross-town rivals, Palomar College. It a very close five game match the Spartans came out on top by a 15-13 score in the fifth game. Setters Cady Delay and Adrianna Visesio both played well with a combined 33 assists. 

Following the tough second match the Spartans swept a talented Bakersfield College team 3-0.  Cady Francis and Lana Salazar led the defensive effort with 16 and 10 digs respectively. The win versus Bakersfield College earned MiraCosta a spot in the tournament championship against the host, LA Pierce. Despite closely contested games the Spartans dropped the match in three games to LA Pierce to conclude their opening weekend. 

MiraCosta is next in action on Saturday, September 3rd, at Bakersfield College.
