Mathys shines as women's soccer nets sixth straight win

Valerie Mathys recorded another hat trick and contributed on all four goals for the MiraCosta College women's soccer team in a 4-0 decision over Southwestern College on Tuesday afternoon.

The win was the sixth consecutive for the Spartans, who have dominated the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference - South Division, recording a victory over each of those squads during the run. MiraCosta's overall record rose to 7-7-1 while Southwestern's fell to 4-11-1 with its fifth straight defeat.

Mathys' first goal came in the 27th minute when after a corner kick by Mia Loreto, Savannah Trevino found the loose ball and dished to Mathys to make it 1-0.

In the second half, the Spartans shared the ball early and often as less then a minute in, Esmeralda Rodriguez made a pass to Peyton Brittain who drew out the keeper and found Mathys for the wide-open, tap-in goal to make it 2-0.

In the 54th minute, it became 3-0 when Brittain beat her defender on the outside and drew the keeper way out of the box before burying the ball in to back of the net.

Mathys had the assist on Brittain's goal, and then scored again to complete the trifecta in the 63rd minute. After Jacquelyn Alvarez's shot was saved by the Southwestern goalie, Berenice Clemente, Mathys gathered the loose ball and finished it off.

Mathys finished with six total shots, four on goal, while Brittain had five in total and also had four on goal.

Next up, the Spartans return to Pacific Coast Athletic Conference - North Division action with a meeting at neighboring rival Palomar College on Friday, Oct. 28, at 3 p.m. MiraCosta will look to keep its winning streak going against a Palomar squad it defeated 6-2 back during the conference opener in September.
