Women's soccer falls to San Diego Miramar, 2-0

Despite two shots on goal by Angelina Rojas and another by Valerie Mathys, the MiraCosta College women's soccer team fell to the second-place team in the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference - North Division, San Diego Miramar College, 2-0, on Tuesday evening.

Rojas and Mathys both led MiraCosta (1-7-1, 1-3-1 PCAC - North) with two shots, while Peyton Brittain and Bianca Gastelum also added an attempt each.

After San Diego Miramar (5-3-1, 4-1 PCAC - North) got on the board with a header in the 54th minute, the Spartans' best chance to tie the match came in the 62nd minute when a cross from Brittain found Rojas open in the middle of the box with only the goalie to beat. However, Rojas' shot was defelected away by the Jets' keeper, leading to a corner kick for MiraCosta before the ball was cleared away by the Miramar defense.

Desite surrending 16 first-half shots (nine on goal), the Spartans were the defintion of "bend but not break" defensively as Vanessa Llamas made five saves in the opening 45 minutes.

The second half featured a big improvement in the category of shots allowed for MiraCosta as they only gave up five in the frame, but saw two go in the back of the net.

A corner kick for Miramar in the final 10 minutes led to another goal for the Jets, and put the match out of reach for MiraCosta.

The Spartans will look to get back into the win column for the first time since their conference opener as they travel to play Cuyamaca College on Friday, October 7, at 3:15 p.m.
