Lady Spartans Close in First Home Game

Lady Spartans Close in First Home Game

Before the first home game of the year for the women's basketball team at MiraCosta there was an announcement honoring the courage and impact of Irene Rivera, mother of Angelyna Rivera-Cantrell.  Irene has demonstrated great strength and positivity with her battle against colon cancer. Angelyna, a freshman guard from Oceanside, scored a career high 12 points in an inspired performace against Compton College.

Despite the scoring of Rivera-Cantrell and Teya Searles the Lady Spartans lost a close game by the final score 46-44.  Throughout the game The Compton College Tartars pulled away only to see the Spartans fight back in contention.  An eleven point half-time lead for the Tartars became only five at the end of the third quarter. Rivera-Cantrell scored six of her 12 points in the fourth quarter helping to cut the deficit to only two points. The Lady Spartans had one last chance, with the ball and the 12 seconds left.  After a time out the ball found it's way to Aracely Hernandez Garcia who launched a three point shot that would've proven to be a game winner.  The shot, although on line, missed as the game ended.

The Spartans were without starting sophomore Danielle Bosley (illness) and Victoria Wilson (knee injury).  Colleen Murphy, Camille Blaye cook and Ayli Tulberg made strong contributions in the absence of Bosley and Wilson.

MiraCosta will take the court next on Friday December 9th at the San Diego City College tournament where they will take on Saddleback College at 12:00pm.
