The MiraCosta women's basketball team opened conference play this week with two wins against Cuyamaca College and Imperial Valley College. After a short break due to Covid protocols, the Spartans returned to the court and won with little resistance.

On Wednesday MiraCosta beat Cuyamaca by a final score of 64-36.  Cuyamaca, only playing with five active players, gave it their all but couldn't keep pace with the Spartans.  Acacia Denton led the way with 28 points, making six three point shots and a variety of fast break lay ups.  Cypree Stevens added 14.  Ocean Yocom, Symere Shelton and Alexis Morgan combinded for 14.  Post players Jada Hughes, Kiara Cassidy and Emmy Wiemann were too much for the Coyotes to handle around the basket, winning the rebounding game.

For the second game of the week, MiraCosta hosted Imperial Valley. The outcome was much like Wednesday's game, winning by a final score of 60-29.  While Imperial Valley kept it close for the first half, the Spartans started to pull away in the second.  Denton (23) and Stevens (22) did the bulk of the scoring but the Spartans also got strong contributions from Eva Mejia and and Jada Hughes

With the wins MiraCosta sits on top of the standings with a 2-0 conference record. They will travel to Palomar College on Wednesday for the first of two meetings between the cross-town rivals.
