After a long break due to the Covid-19 pandemic the MiraCosta women's basketball team returned to the court last weekend at the San Bernardino Valley College tournament.  Although the team is made up primarily of freshmen, the expectations are high and they didn't disappoint.

In their first game of the season the Spartans took on Copper Mountain College and won 63-54.  MiraCosta was led by the guard play of Acacia Denton, Cypree Stevens and Symere Shelton, combining for 38 of the 63 points.  Freshman forward Mayleen Garcia added a double-double, 11 points and 10 rebounds.

Although the Spartans showed some early season nerves and committed 23 turnovers, they had 12 fewer than their opponents.

In the second game of the tournament MiraCosta took on West LA College and lost by a close 61-57 final score.  No statistics are currently available for this game.

In the third and final game of the weekend the Spartans rolled to an easy 71-40 win over Compton College. Acacia Denton led all scorers with 24 points and also added eight rebounds.  Cypree Stevens added 15 points and freshman forward Ocean Yocum added seven points on perfect shooting. Yocum made all three of her shots, including one 3-pointer.

The Spartans had 18 assists on their 29 field goals and only committed 13 turnovers.

MiraCosta finished the weekend with an overal record of 2-1 leading into their next game on Thursday November 18th at home. Tip off is set for 6PM and a restricted amount of spectators will be allowed. For more information please contact pconahan@miracosta.edu.
