Spartans Beat Rival Comets, Stay Undefeated in Conference

Men's soccer team poses for a picture.

Tuesday's men's soccer game was an important one for the MiraCosta Spartans.  Historically, the rivalry between MiraCosta and Palomar goes back more than 50 years.  In recent history, MiraCosta has dominated the matchup, winning the majority of matches in the last decade.  Leading up to this specific game, MiraCosta held the top position in the conference standings, and was undefeated with a 5-0-1 record.  The Spartans had already won their first match up with the Comets (2-0), but this game was equally as important, with a conference championship and playoff implications on the line.

Neither team scored until the 68th minute when sophomore Jose Aguirre created space and scored. After the game winning goal, the Spartans defended well and and kept possession, finishing the match without giving up any major opportunities to their opponents.  Aguirre scored his sixth goal of the season and has accrued four assists in addition.  Jeshua Lombana played all 90 minutes in the goal, finishing with the shutout.  The defensive line of Shih Kuan Yang, Juan Diaz, Tinh Ho, David Garcia and John Rivera was formidable.  In seven conference games the Spartans have given up only two goals.

With the win, MiraCosta improves to 6-0-1 in conference, maintaining sole possession of first place of the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference standings.

The Spartans will travel to Mesa College for their next match on Friday at 3PM.
