After a 4-0 start in conference play and two key wins against ranked teams, Palomar and Grossmont, the MiraCosta women's volleyball team earned the #25 ranking in the state poll. The Spartans take their undefeated record into their next match on Wednesday against San Diego Mesa College, who is currently ranked #4 in the state and is also 4-0 in conference. The match is scheduled for a 6PM start time and will be at MiraCosta College in Oceanside, California.
The early success for the Spartans can be attributed to a few factors. While the play of Daysha Halbert might be the most obvious reason for their hot start, Alexis Jones, Sarah Campo-Sanchez, Feagaiga Naotola and setter Megan Jo Martin all have forty kills or more. In addition, middles Tori Tingum and Elle Scott have made notable impacts during their time on the court. Martin, currently has the seocnd most assists in conference play with 322 over 11 games. Halbert, has the second highest average kills per set, with 3.82 over 11 games.
Defensively MiraCosta has also been stellar. Libero Ellie Perez currently leads the conference in average digs per set, with 4.56. She has a total of 155 while Halbert has 138. The Spartans have had a noticeable presence at the net over through the win streak. The size and blocking threats, including Campo-Sanchez, Naotola, Scott, Tingum, and Martin are all in the top 25 for average blocks per set in the conference.
Wendesday's match against Mesa will feature two of the top teams in the state, both vying for a conference championship and potential playoff seeds.
