Spartans Beat Palomar and Earn Their Way Into Third Place

The rivalry has existed for decades between the MiraCosta College Spartans and their neighbors to the East, Palomar. When the comets came to Oceanside on Wednesday for a conference match, it attacted a big crowd and a lot of competitive energy.  The gym was electric as the Spartans and comets competed in a 3-1 victory for MiraCosta.  

The first game was so close that it went to extra points, with MiraCosta gaining the edge, 28-26.  After losing the second game, the Spartans won the third and fourth games, both by a 25-21 score. While the sets were close, MiraCosta consistently found a way to earn the big point when it mattered.

MiraCosta had a balanced attach that got a number of hitters involved. The Spartans were led offensively by freshman Daysha Halbert, who finished with 13 kills.  Ryanne Davis, Eesha Chun-Dela Cruz and Sarah Campo-Sanchez each finished with seven kills.  Alexis Jones and Quinn Curran both added six kills.  Curran, the setter, also finished with 28 assists and 15 digs.

On the defensive side of the net MiraCosta was strong, finishing with 73 digs.  Five Spartans had more 10 or more digs including Curran (15), Halbert (15), Ana Lara (13), Lacey Garcia (12) and Cameron-Jade Caimpon (10). 

With the win MiraCosta improves to 6-3 in conference, landing them in third place.  Next up they will travel to Southwestern College for 5pm match on Friday, October 20.
