Jager and Gracey help MiraCosta past Golden West in the first round of the CCCAA state tournament

The MiraCosta women's volleyball team finished the regular season with an overal record of 18-8 and earned the #16 seed in the CCCAA state tournament.  With their seed the Spartans played host to the #17 seed, Golden West College, a team with multiple dynamic hitters that played in a very strong Orange Empire conference.

MiraCosta won the first two sets but they were highly competitive, winning the first 27-25 and the second 25-23.  In the third set the Rustlers came out strong and stole a set from the Spartans winning 25-19.  The fourth and final set was as competitive as the first two, with multiple lead changes and both teams having chances to win.  In the end, MiraCosta won 28-26 with the final point being scored by sophomore setter Summer Hoslett.

The Spartans were led by Kailyn Jager and Jackie Gracey who made their impact felt both on the offensive and defensive sides of the net. Jager finished with 26 kills, 17 digs, hitting a .302.  Gracey added 17 kills and 10 digs, hitting .417. Summer Hoslett quarterbacked the team with 45 assists and one game winning kill. Makayla Hicks continued her steady play, finishing with 10 kills and 12 digs.  Riley Komo and Amaya Bookhart made a noticeable difference with their defense.  Komo, the libero, had 15 digs, including some impressive ones late in the match when Golden West was trying to steal away the last set.  Bookhart had three blocks in addition to her four kills, and played with energy that brought her team momentum and numerous points of the match.

With the win MiraCosta advances to the second round where they will take on top seed, Ventura College.  The Spartans will travel to Ventura on Tuesday, the game time is not yet decided but likely to be in the evening.
