The MiraCosta men's soccer team continued its impressive start to the 2024 season with a 3-1 win over Rio Hondo on September 3rd at Oceanside. This victory pushed the Spartans to a perfect 3-0, marking the best start under head coach Frank Zimmerman since his tenure began in 2012.
MiraCosta came out strong, with Dominik Wicks opening the scoring just three minutes into the match, finishing off an assist from Alexander Oregon to give the Spartans an early 1-0 lead. Rio Hondo quickly responded, equalizing in the 16th minute after a defensive miscommunication led to an own goal.
The second half saw MiraCosta regain control. Tato Serrano netted the go-ahead goal in the 73rd minute, putting the Spartans up 2-1 with a well-placed penalty kick earned when Charaboy Inriestra was fouled in the box. As the game wound down, Alonso Torres Rojas secured the win with a 90th-minute goal off a Dominik Wicks assist, capping a solid all-around performance for MiraCosta.
Goalkeeper Bryan Casteneda anchored a strong defensive effort, making three crucial saves to limit Rio Hondo to just one goal. The Spartans' defense held firm throughout, allowing no shots on goal in the second half.
This 3-0 start is a significant milestone for the program, as Coach Zimmerman continues to lead the team to new heights. The Spartans will look to extend their unbeaten streak as they prepare for their next matchup on Friday against Santa Monica College. Kickoff is scheduled for 4pm at MiraCosta College.
