In their first year of official competition the MiraCosta men's rugby club exceeded all expectations.  Their first major accomplishment was finishing the Gold Coast Conference schedule undefeated. The Spartans were dominant winning by an average of 40 points per match. After the conference season MiraCosta moved on to the western region championship where they won a competitive match against Humboldt State University.  With the win the Spartans qualified for the NSCRO National Championship in Nebraska.  With just a short time to prepare the club went out and was dominant on the field.  In their first match MiraCosta beat Wayne State (Detroit, MI).  In the championship game the Spartans beat John Carroll University (University Heights, OH) by a score of 56-5.

The MiraCosta men's rugby club was led by first year head coach Keli Ross-Ma'u. Previous to starting the program Coach Ross-Ma'u was very involved in youth rugby in the Tri-City area.
