The MiraCosta men's basketball team earned the #13 seed in the 3C2A state playoffs and will host the #20 seed, Compton College. The Spartans enter the post season with an overall record of 20-8 and a second place finish in the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference. In the 2024-25 season, MiraCosta earned key wins against Irvine Valley College, Palomar College (twice), San Diego City College and Southwestern College. The Spartans will host the game on Wednesday, Feb 26th, at 7pm at the Oceanside Campus (1 Barnard Drive, Oceanside, CA 92056.)
MiraCosta's success can be attributed to their deep roster and strong defense. The Spartans led their conference and finished fifth in the state in defensive field goal percentage, holding their opponents to just 39% shooting. The team also ranked tenth in the state in defensive rebounding margin, much to the the credit of freshman Ramel Bethea, who averaged 9.4 rebounds per game. Bethea also averaged 13 points per game and 4.5 blocks per game.
Sophomore point guard DaVaughn McCrumb led the conference in assists per game, with 5.5. McCrumb adds 9 points and two steals per game. Sophomore guard Benji Hilstock adds 9 points per game, while sophomores Pearse Long and John Hapgood score 7ppg and 6ppg respectively. In total, 11 different MiraCosta players have scored double digits in a game this season, making them a juggernaut, not knowing whose night it is to step up.
When discussing the depth of the MiraCosta roster you have to mention sophomores Naby Diaw (6-5), Jaiden Greene (6-7), Rami Anglo (6-2), Mason Bowers (6-3), and Isaiah Stokes (6-8). They each bring a different dynamic to the floor which allows Coach Robinson flexibility on if he wants to play fast or slow. Freshmen Terrion Woodard and Nas Taylor also give the Spartans a boost off the bench as needed.
MiraCosta's path to a state championship starts with Compton College. If they win in the first round, the next test would be at #4, Mt. San Antonio College on Saturday. To see the whole bracket, click here.
Admission to Wednesday's game will be $12 for general admission, $8 for students/staff, senior citizens (60 and over) and children under 12.
