In the most important game of the year, the MiraCosta men's basketball team showed up. Going into the game the Spartans had a 6-0 conference record and hosted the Miramar College Jets, who brought with them a 5-1 record. The outcome of the game would give the winner an important victory and a place near the top of the standings.
MiraCosta dominated the game from the tip. The impressive low post presence of Kai Burdick and Kobe Smith proved too much for the Jets to handle. Smith led all scorers with 20 points and continues to be one of the most difficult match ups in the state. Burdick added 12 points, six in the first few minutes, establishing MiraCosta's dominance inside. Freshman guard, DaVaughn McCrumb, scored 12, but none bigger than the back to back three point shots in the second half. These shots essentially ended any possibility of Miramar catching up.
The Spartans also received strong minutes from Dylan Cabs, Donavan Freeman, Jalen Zeno, Mason Bowers and JC Campbell.
MiraCosta cruised to the victory by a final score of 64-46, holding the Jets under 50. The Spartans managed the win without shooting the ball particulary well from the field. Their defense kept them in control of the tempo and allowed them to keep the comfortable cushion for 40 minutes.
With the win MiraCosta stays undefeated in conference play, 7-0. They will host San Diego City College on Wednesday for another important conference match. Tip off is scheduled for 6pm.
