Michelle Mason and Claudia Mathews Win Conference Tournament

Michelle Mason and Claudia Mathews after winning the pairs championship.

At the end of the conference schedule all six PCAC colleges come together to play a Pairs Championship.  On the first day MiraCosta was dominant moving four of its five pairs forward into the quarterfinals.  Earning a spot in the quarterfinals also ensures those duos a position in the Regional Pairs Tournament which will be played on Friday, May 4th at Irvine Valley College.

Today, the Spartan duos had a strong showing, occupying three of the four semi-final participants and then eventually moving one pair forward to the finals, Michelle Mason and Claudia Mathews.  Mason and Mathews faced a talented Grossmont team in the finals and lost the first game 13-21.  With their backs against the wall they took control of the second game and won by a final score of 21-16.  In the third game they used their momentum to win 15-9, earning them the title of PCAC Conference Pairs Champion.

Michelle Mason is a freshman from Sun Valley, Idaho. Claudia Mathews is a 5-11 sophomore from Carlsbad, California. The two became partners leading up to the March 2nd match against Concordia University. In that match they competed in the 4's flight before slowly raising up the ladder, competing in the 2's flight for much of the conference schedule.

The Spartans will next be in action as a team on Tuesday, May 1st in the CCCAA State Playoffs.  The location of these matches will be decided and announced on Saturday, April 28th.
