Willie Buchanon
Willie Buchanon is a local legend whose journey from Oceanside to NFL stardom is both inspiring and exemplary. Willie Buchanon began his football career at MiraCosta College, earning Junior College All-American honors in 1969. He then transferred to San Diego State University, where he became an All-American cornerback and was named MVP of the 1971 East-West Shrine Game.
In the 1972 NFL Draft, Willie was selected seventh overall by the Green Bay Packers. He made an immediate impact, earning NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year honors. Over his 11-season career with the Packers and later the San Diego Chargers, he was a three-time Pro Bowl selection and a First-Team All-Pro. Notably, in 1978, he tied an NFL record with four interceptions in a single game.
Beyond his playing days, Willie has been a pillar of the Oceanside community, starting the Buchanon Youth Foundation to support youth development in North County.
