Spartans Open Season with Split

In the opening weekend of the 2022 women's volleyball season, the MiraCosta Spartans split their two matches.  In the first match of the day MiraCosta lost a close decision to host Pasadena City College.  The Spartans won the first set 25-18 but dropped the second set 19-25.  In the third set MiraCosta responded and won 25-23 but then dropped the fourth set by the same score.  The two teams were clearly evenly matched, both winning close sets leading in to the fifth and final set.  In the fifth Pasadena held on for a 15-13 win, handing the Spartans their first loss of the season.

Against Pasadena City, the Spartans had a well balanced attack led by Kailyn Jager's 15 kills.  Jackie Gracey added eight kills while Makayla Hicks and Amaya Bookhart both added six.  Summer Hoslett distributed the ball to her teammates, finishing with a total of 36 assists. 

Defensively Jager and Riley Komo anchored the back row, finishing with 15 and eight digs respectively. Amaya Bookhart dominated the net finishing with eight blocks.

 

In the second match of the day the Spartans took down Mt. San Jacinto College by a final score of 3-1.  Despite dropping the third set 28-26, the Spartans looked confident, winning the fourth set in a convincing fashion, 25-11. 

Kailyn Jager was hard for the Eagles to handle, finishing with 24 kills and 14 digs. Makayla Hicks, Jackie Gracey and Amaya Bookhart combined for 14 kills.  Defensively, Gracey and Riley Komo both added 13 digs, and Eden Thomas finished with 10.  

Summer Hoslett finished with 33 assists and nine digs in a well rounded performance.

 

The Spartans are next in action on Friday, September 2nd, at the LA Mission College tournament.
