Spartans Beat Undefeated Bakersfield in Four

Team celebrates after winning a big point.

Bakersfield College entered the match with MiraCosta on Saturday with a perfect 7-0 record, ranked #4 in the state and having only lost four total games.  The night before the Renegades beat Palomar College in three straight sets and appeared to be playing at a high level.  MiraCosta entered the match ranked #11 in the state but still had much room to improve in their play.  The match didn't disaapoint those that were in attendance. Both teams played with confidence and momentum changed multiple times. The Spartans won the first two games but not without a fight from the visiting Renegades.  MiraCosta finished the first set 25-22 and received key kills from Hayley Torres, Gabriella Petersen and Savannah So'oto.  For their 20th point Torres served a key ace to go up 20-18.  Ultimately the set ended on an error by Bakersfield.

The second set was equally as entertaining and competitive. Bakersfield led 14-9 and then 17-14 but MiraCosta took the lead at 23-22 on back to back serves by Felicity So'oto.  The final score of the set was 25-23 giving the Spartans a 2-0 lead.

The third set was a instant classic, close from the first point and finishing with the Renegades keeping their hopes alive with a 28-26 win.  In the fourth and final set the Spartan finished the job with a tough 25-23 final score.  The Spartans defense was anchored by Paola Peralta who finished with 25 digs.  Felicity So'oto finished with 50 assists sharing the ball to her multiple offensive weapons including Hayley Torres (22 kills), Savannah So'oto (14 kills) and Gabriella Petersen (9 kills.)

With the win the Spartans move into the top three in the RPI for team in Southern California. 

MiraCosta will next be in action on Wednesday at home at 6PM as they start conference play against Imperial Valley College.
