MiraCosta Controls Tempo, Wins at City

Uneque Fradiue

With a five game win streak and having won seven of their last eight, the MiraCosta women's basketball team travelled to San Diego City College to play a PCAC crossover game before starting conference play.  From the tip the Spartans controlled the pace of the game with their defensive pressure, creating numerous turnovers that led to easy baskets.  The final score of the game was 92-62 in favor of the Spartans. With the victory MiraCosta improves their overal record to 11-4.

The Spartans were led in scoring by freshman Uneque Fradiue with 18 points but also got strong contributions from Chynna Cochran (17 points) and Julia Iman (13 points.)  All MiraCosta players scored leading to the high point total. At halftime MiraCosta led 47-28 and was in full control of the game.  With the exception to a few minutes in the fourth quarter, the Spartans controlled the pace of the game and got the shot attempts they wanted, both in transition and in the half-court.

MiraCosta shot 53% from the field and 83% from the free throw line.  Offensively the Spartans created great attacks to the basket by Cochran, Iman, Savannah Beasley, Kiva Reyes and Helena Betancourt.  The guard play demonstrated the skills to attack and finish but also the unselfishness to make the next pass, leading to open shots for others.

Freshman McKena Stoeff led the Spartans in rebounding with eight total.

The defensive pressure created 30 San Diego City turnovers and held them to 38% shooting from the field.

MiraCosta will take their six game win streak into the first conference game at home on Friday against Mt. San Jacinto College. Tip off is at 7PM.
