Men's Soccer Comes Up Short

Matt Short

The Spartan men's soccer team entered the PCAC conference match with San Diego City undefeated, and after an early red card for a visiting Knights player the future looked promising for MiraCosta.  Unfortunately, despite playing a majority of the game with one more player than the Knights, the final result was a 2-3 loss for the Spartans.  MiraCosta entered the game short-handed with injuries and was missing other players that couldn't be present.  To make matters worse, in the first few minutes two starters went off the field due to injuries which immediately added to MiraCosta's short roster issues.

San Diego City opened the scoring with an early goal around the five minute mark in the game.  MiraCosta answered with a few good opportunities but without scoring a goal.  Just before the end of the first half Matt Short scored to even the score, 1-1, heading into halftime.

The Knights scored their second goal at the 65 minute mark but was quickly equalized by the Spartans' #21 Johnny Verde.  Goalkeeper Seth Ketterer had a strong showing with one impressive save at the 68 minute mark.  Ketterer deflected the one on one shot attempt after a defensive breakdown, saving the goal.

In the 85th minute San Diego City scored their third and final goal to take the lead.  In the remaining minutes the Spartans pressed to score the equalizer but came up empty.

MiraCosta will next be in action on Friday, September 29th at 4pm at the Socal Soccer Complex (3302 Senior Center Drive, Oceanside, CA 92056.
