MiraCosta Wins Prestigious Conference Award

For the first time ever, MiraCosta College took home the DeVore Award for the 2017-18 calendar year. The DeVore Award is given to the athletic program in the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference that has accumulated the highest average of points based upon results during the calendar year.

MiraCosta edged out the San Diego Mesa College, Palomar College and Grossmont College in taking home the honr for 2017-18.  The Spartans used a pair of solid finishes from the volleyball program in winning the award.The women's beach volleyball program finished second in the state while the indoor volleyball program won the PCAC conference championship and advanced to the Elite 8 in the State Championship tournament.

The Spartans also finished third in conference in both women's soccer and women's basketball, adding points to the total.

The DeVore Award is named after the late Chester S. "Chet" DeVore, founding Commissioner of the Pacific Coast Conference. DeVore was President/ Superintendent of  Southwestern College in Chula Vista from 1961 until his retirement 21 years later.  He became the first Commissioner of the PCAC, the host conference for community college athletics in San Diego County and Imperial County in 1982. He served until his retirement from that post in 1998. DeVore, a World War II hero and Purple Heart and Bronze Star recipient who left a long legacy both in academics and athletics at college, conference, state and national levels, died in January 2011. He was 92.

MiraCosta College, under the leadership of President Dr. Sunita Cooke, Vice President of Student Services Dr. Alketa Wojcik and Dean of Student Life Dr. Dilcie Perez, becomes the fifth college to win the award in the nine year history of the award.
