In just their first year of official competition the Rugby Club of MiraCosta College has accomplished the unthinkable. With a 56-5 final score against John Carrol University the Spartans finish an undefeated season and won the NSCRO National Championship.  The road to the championship went through JCU (University Heights, OH) and in the semi-finals, Wayne State University (Detroit, MI).  All matches were played at Founders Field in Pittsburg, PA.

MiraCosta is led by head coach Keli Ross-Ma'u, who came to MiraCosta in 2016 to help start the rugby club to give local youth an opportunity to play the sport as they continued their education.  In 2017 the Spartans applied to enter the Gold Coast Conference but had to spend a year in waiting which allowed them to play a number of "friendly" matches but were not eligible for post season competition.  In 2018 MiraCosta won the Gold Coast Conference third division which includes UNLV, Occidental College, Pepperdine University, Whittier College, and Westmont College.  With the conference championship they qualified to move on to the NSCRO Pacific Coast Regional tournament where they defeated Pacific University by a score of 88-9 and then Humboldt State University 25-22.  The win versus HSU earned them the opportunity to play for the National Championship in Pittsburg.

The Rugby Club of MiraCosta College is open to all students and offers opportunities for men and women.
