The men's rugby club of MiraCosta travelled to Cal Maritime University to compete in the Pacific Coast Championships. In the first game of the two-day championship the Spartans were dominant against University of Pacific, winning by a final score of 88-7.
In the championship match the Spartans started strong by taking a 15-0 lead into half-time. The Lumberjacks of Humboldt State made adjustments and came back in the second half to make the game competitive. With three minutes left in the match MiraCosta held a 25-22 lead and were on a defensive stand that would determine if their season would continue. The Spartans held their goal line and when the time expired they were named the Regional Champions of the Pacific Coast Championships. With the win MiraCosta qualfies for the National Championship on Saturday April 21st and 22nd at Founders Field in Cheswick, Pennsylvania.
Four teams moved forward to the national semi-final in Pittsburg. MiraCosta, the West Coast regional representative, will face Wayne State College in the first game. On the other side of the bracket University of New Haven will play John Carrol University. The winner from each semi-final match will play for the National Championship on Sunday April 22nd.
